The Maya mathematician who signed his own formula

FACT (locked, build on it, do not re-research): in July 2026 researchers publishing in the journal Antiquity reported that a formula painted on a wall at Xultun in Guatemala, written in the 8th century and about 1,200 years old, ends with a signature: Sak Tahn Waax, meaning White Chested Fox. It is the only known example of a Classic Maya mathematician credited by name for his own work. The formula links the 260 day ritual calendar, the 365 day solar year, and the cycles of Venus and Mars, which Maya astronomers recorded as 584 days and 780 days, and it joins them in a way found in no other known Maya text.
